List of the Best 3D Printing Materials of 2022

3D printing is becoming more and more popular as technology is becoming more accessible. 3D printing can be done in various materials, each with different properties and characteristics. The most popular material for 3d printers are thermoplastics, but there are also other options like metal or food-grade plastic filaments available.

3D printing materials are called filaments and they are in various varieties, such as PLA, ABS, HIPS, Nylon etc. There are many types of filament to choose from and hence they are becoming cheaper every year. 3D printing materials (filaments) are what make up the product you print, so it’s important to know the different types of filaments available. This article will focus on some of the most common 3d printing materials and their varying properties, which should help you decide which one is best for your project!

Types of 3D Printing Materials

  • PLA Filament

PLA filament is a type of bioplastic that is derived from renewable resources like corn starch and sugarcane. PLA filament has a low melting point, prints easily without the need for a heated bed and emits minimal odor when printing.

  • ABS Filament

ABS filament is an oil-based thermoplastic most commonly used in 3D printers to create objects with a rougher, more industrial finish. ABS filament melts at a higher temperature than PLA filaments and adheres well to both glass and aluminum print beds for printing.

  • PC Filament

PC stands for Polycarbonate thermoplastic which is a strong, heat resistant material used in 3D printing processes commonly with dual extrusion 3d printers where two colors of filament can be used simultaneously. PC filament is also transparent and has a high resistance to impact making it perfect for creating eyewear, gaming dice or other items that need to withstand physical stress.

  • Nylon Filament

Nylon is an engineering grade thermoplastic with great strength, durability and elasticity making it ideal for 3D printing projects that require a high tolerance and tensile strength. Nylon filament has good flexibility while still maintaining rigidity, making it the perfect option for creating objects such as phone cases or clips where some elasticity is needed.

  • Wood Filament

Wood filaments are made of natural materials based on renewable sources like agricultural residues or byproducts from other manufacturing processes. They offer a unique 3D printing experience and can be sanded, painted and stained to achieve the look of real wood without all the maintenance!

  • HIPS Filament

HIPS stands for High Impact Polystyrene which is made from plastic materials that are recyclable using more environmentally friendly production techniques than traditional ABS filament. HIPS filament is less brittle than ABS filament and has a higher resistance to heat, making it perfect for large prints or parts that will be exposed to high temperatures.

There are many other types of 3D printing filaments available on the market today, each with their own unique properties and benefits. With so many options to choose from, finding the right 3D printing filament is only the beginning.
